ONYX Hospitality Group has partnered with sustainable energy solutions provider SP Group to examine the use of lower-carbon energy systems at suitable hotel developments in Thailand.

The two companies will assess energy technologies intended to cut emissions, raise operating efficiency, and generate longer-term value for hotel owners.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the companies in this regard covers the rollout of energy-efficient systems, including cooling-as-a-service (CaaS) and renewable energy solutions.

The companies aim to improve energy performance, as well as reduce operational expenditure and environmental effects while maintaining guest comfort and service standards.

The arrangement follows SP Group’s first CaaS project for ONYX Hospitality Group in Thailand, at the 429-room Amari Don Muang Airport Bangkok hotel.

The project replaces the property’s existing chiller with higher-efficiency equipment and incorporates an advanced chiller plant management system.

The system automates controls and manages energy use to improve efficiency and resource allocation.

The replacement system has a cooling capacity of 1,195 refrigeration tonnes. Once operational, it is expected to reduce energy consumption by more than 40% compared with the previous setup.

That reduction equates to approximately 900,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year and annual savings of around Bt4m ($120,277).

Over the 15-year contract period, the hotel is expected to save approximately Bt25.5m in operating costs and reduce carbon emissions by 449t a year.

Following the project at Amari Don Muang Airport Bangkok, ONYX Hospitality Group and SP Group will continue assessing opportunities to introduce sustainable energy systems at other suitable properties in Thailand.
