Prominent UK hotel chain Travelodge has launched a new dual-location student recruitment initiative, providing more than 400 positions across the UK.

The company said that it aims to address the increasing number of students seeking employment to help fund the increasing expenses of studying at university.

Flexible work access

With a network of 580 hotels nationwide, Travelodge is offering flexibility for students to work at a hotel near their university during term-time and another in their hometowns during holiday periods.

The hotel chain will provide opportunities in teams including reception, bar/café, housekeeping and linen porters.

With an opportunity to earn around £10,000 annually working 18.5 hours a week, students can also access Travelodge’s in-house management development programme, Aspire.

Student financial insights

Travelodge commissioned a study, conducted by OnePoll in September 2023 and involving 500 UK students, that sheds light on the financial challenges they face.

It indicates that 85% of students view working as a necessity to get through university, 55% are currently in employment whilst studying and 40% are seeking employment.

The study also revealed that on average, students are spending more £19,000 per year to study at university. This includes £9,250 for tuition fees and £10,000 to cover the cost of living, equalling monthly outgoings of approximately £635.

Recruitment beyond students

While focusing on student recruitment, Travelodge is also expanding its workforce with 75 additional roles. This includes 50 hotel management positions including hotel managers and assistant managers, supervisors, housekeeping and bar/café supervisors.

It will also offer positions in the in-house maintenance department for engineers and has 20 roles available at the company’s head office in Thame across revenue, procurement, IT, legal, finance and customer service sectors.
