Budget hotels in Europe are demonstrating notable resilience in the face of ongoing economic challenges, according to recent consumer research.

A survey conducted by Samsung Electronics Europe and OnePoll, involving 5,000 participants across the continent, reveals shifting consumer preferences that favour cost-effective accommodations without compromising on quality.

Changing consumer perceptions

The survey indicates that 39% of respondents are becoming less convinced about the added value of premium hotels.

In contrast, 29% of participants consider staying in budget hotels to be a great experience, highlighting a growing appreciation for affordable yet quality lodging options.

This shift in perception suggests that consumers are increasingly prioritising value over luxury when selecting accommodations.

Affordability remains a priority

Affordability continues to be a significant factor in travellers' decisions. The survey found that 87% of respondents pay less than €120 (£107) per night for their stay, whether for business or leisure purposes.

This trend underscores the importance of cost-effective options in the current economic climate, where many consumers are seeking to optimise their travel budgets.

Shifting priorities in hotel selection

When evaluating hotel options, cleanliness emerges as a crucial factor, with 81% of respondents deeming it essential.

Additionally, regional preferences highlight varying priorities: 46% of German respondents are unwilling to compromise on the quality of breakfast or dinner, while 33% of Italian and 17% of French respondents prioritise customer service.

These insights suggest that while affordability is paramount, specific amenities and services continue to influence consumer choices across different European markets.

Ultimately, the survey findings illustrate a significant shift towards budget accommodations in Europe, driven by a combination of economic factors and changing consumer expectations.

As travellers increasingly seek value without sacrificing quality, budget hotels are well-positioned to meet these demands and maintain their resilience in the evolving hospitality landscape.
