The Waldorf Astoria New York has officially reopened after an extensive eight-year renovation, marking a significant milestone in the city's hospitality landscape.

The renovation aimed to restore the hotel's historic grandeur while introducing modern luxury amenities.

Extensive renovation and modernisation

The renovation of the Waldorf Astoria New York commenced in 2017 and was completed in 2025. The project aimed to preserve the hotel's iconic Art Deco features while updating its infrastructure to meet contemporary standards.

The renovation included the restoration of the Grand Ballroom, the Silver Corridor, and the Peacock Alley lounge, which now features a grand piano once owned by Cole Porter AFAR Media.

The hotel also introduced 375 guest rooms and 372 luxury residences, blending classic design elements with modern touches.

Ownership and management changes

Originally owned by Hilton, the Waldorf Astoria New York was sold to China's Anbang Insurance Group in 2014 for $1.95 billion.

Following Anbang's financial troubles and subsequent government takeover in 2018, the property came under the control of Dajia Insurance Group, a state-run entity.

Despite the change in ownership, Hilton retained a 100-year management contract to operate the hotel.

New dining experiences

The reopening of the Waldorf Astoria New York introduced several new dining options. The flagship restaurant, Lex Yard, is led by acclaimed chef Michael Anthony and offers a modern take on classic American dishes.

Other dining venues include Yoshoku, a Japanese restaurant, and the reimagined Peacock Alley lounge, which now serves as a full-service restaurant while maintaining its historic Art Deco elegance.

The reopening of the Waldorf Astoria New York signifies the completion of one of the most ambitious hotel renovations in recent history, blending historic preservation with modern luxury.
