Global hospitality company Accor has announced a series of initiatives aimed at conserving water and promoting sustainability across its operations.

The initiatives include reducing water consumption in hotel rooms, engaging guests in conservation efforts and collaborating with external partners to amplify water stewardship.

Water footprint in food and beverage sector

Accor recognises the significant water footprint of the food and beverage sector and is prioritising initiatives to make reductions. One key focus is tackling food waste, which accounts for 53% of the waste generated in hotels.

Strategies include promoting sustainable sourcing practices and offering guests alternative dining experiences with sustainability at their core.

Accor has entered a strategic partnership with BE WTR, a premium sustainable water brand, to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles from its properties by 2025.

By introducing refillable glass bottles, Accor hotels worldwide will offer guests a sustainable hydration solution.

Empowering guests for water conservation

Accor is empowering guests to contribute to water conservation efforts through initiatives such as the Skip the Clean project. This encourages guests to forgo daily room cleaning to conserve water and energy, while also earning loyalty points.

If all multi-night guests were to opt out of daily cleaning, up to 4% of Accor Group’s direct water consumption could be saved, equivalent to 6,500 showers per year for an average hotel.

By raising awareness and encouraging such behavioural changes, Accor aims to amplify the impact of its sustainability initiatives.

Fostering shared solutions to environment challenges

Accor’s commitment to water stewardship extends beyond its own operations. The company actively participates in international coalitions to foster shared solutions to environmental and social challenges.

Accor recently joined the CEO Water Mandate, a United Nations initiative to pursue continual progress in six areas of water stewardship.

By forging partnerships and collaborating with other industry leaders, Accor aims to accelerate collective positive water impact in 100 priority basins by 2030.
