Digital travel platform Agoda has announced a strategic partnership with Chinese shopping platform Meituan to cater to the resurgent travel market in China.

The collaboration involves sharing resources, including hotel inventories, photos, reviews and facilities, within critical business domains such as supply chain management, product offerings, technology and data intelligence.

Agoda will utilise its extensive overseas hotel supply network to offer more platform-exclusive accommodations at competitive prices on Meituan.

This means that Chinese travellers will have a wider range of cost-effective choices for their outbound trips. Agoda and Meituan have also jointly introduced “Chinese Preferred” hotels in 1,000 sought-after destinations globally, with a focus on language needs and convenient payment options for Chinese travellers.

Collaborative marketing initiatives

During peak outbound travel seasons, Agoda and Meituan will embark on collaborative marketing initiatives. This will enhance the travel experience for Chinese customers, especially during popular travel periods such as the summer holidays and National Day holidays.

During the 2023 summer vacation period, Agoda and Meituan worked closely on hotel technology and AI initiatives.

Meituan used Agoda’s content bank of hotel images, descriptions and customer reviews to create AI-generated videos for more than 3,000 hotels, making it easier for users to select accommodation. Both companies will continue to focus on AI-driven initiatives.

Resurgence in Chinese outbound tourism

China’s outbound tourism sector is experiencing a resurgence, coinciding with rapid growth in Meituan’s overseas accommodation division.

Between January and August 2023, Meituan’s bookings for overseas accommodation exceeded the total for the entire year of 2019, with significant booking activity in Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea.
