The Mount Nelson Hotel is situated at the foothills of Table Mountain near Cape Town, South Africa. The hotel is spread over nine acres and is positioned within a garden estate. Opened in 1899, the hotel was mainly used to provide accommodation to Union-Castle liner passengers.

Accommodation

The hotel has 201 rooms and suites in six accommodation wings. The 99 superior rooms are located in the Oasis Wing, The Main Hotel and Green Park. The rooms comprise twin/king-sized beds, a mini-lounge area, a writing desk and an en-suite bathroom. Luxury rooms are more spacious than superior rooms and offer views of Table Mountain or the hotel gardens. The 45 luxury rooms are housed in the main hotel, Green Park and Taunton House.

Green Park has two purpose-built rooms to accommodate physically impaired guests. These rooms feature bathrooms with wider doors, a low sink and bath with handrails, and a shower with a movable showerhead and chair.

Suites

The junior suites comprise a bedroom with a larger lounge area and en-suite bathroom. Executive suites are in Helmsley and Taunton House. They feature twin/king-size beds, open-plan lounges, dining areas, a private balcony with garden furniture, marble bathrooms and walk-in dressing rooms. Some of the suites also feature a kitchenette with microwave.

The 19 deluxe suites include a separate bedroom, living and dining area, a private courtyard, balcony or garden. Deluxe suites are located in Helmsley, Hof Villa, Taunton House and the Garden Cottages. Luxury suites are offered with a master bedroom, an entrance hall, a large lounge area, dining room and an en-suite bathroom.

The penthouse suites are the most luxurious and spacious of the hotel and are housed on the top floor of the Green Park. They have a marbled entrance hall, master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, private dining room, guest toilet and cloakroom and a large lounge opening to a private balcony with views of Table Mountain. The suite also includes a wet bar and kitchen facilities. The suite is fitted with 1930s light fittings, Mercury glass bedside lamps, a Venetian mirror and an original Louis-style desk from 1899.

In-room amenities

All of the hotel’s rooms are air-conditioned and come with a clock radio, wireless internet connectivity and a data port for high-speed VDSL internet access, a DVD player, luggage racks and an in-room digital safe. A fully stocked mini bar is available in all rooms and suites. The hotel also includes inter-leading rooms, paraplegic facilities and 24-hour medical support.

Dining

The menu of the Cape Colony restaurant at Mount Nelson features local South African cuisine. The restaurant has vaulted ceilings, a trompe l’ouille mural and a sparkling crystal chandelier.

The Oasis Restaurant is situated on the poolside terrace overlooking the hotel’s garden and is well known for its bistro-style alfresco dining.

Mount Nelson also offers dining at the chef’s table in an alcove in the hotel kitchen for ten people. The chef’s table features an oversized mirror to give a view of the kitchen. Menus on are decided on the day according to the chef’s choice of fresh seasonal and local ingredients.

The Planet Champagne and Cocktail Bar offers cocktails, a wide selection of champagne and wines, and an assortment of light meals and canapés.

The hotel serves afternoon tea in the lounge, on the terrace or in the garden. The buffet offers a variety of cakes, pastries and sandwiches.

Spa

The Libirisa spa is located in three original Victorian buildings. The spa includes treatment rooms, including four tandem treatment rooms and a conservatory and refreshment station.

The various messages and treatments at the spa include hot river stone massage, de-stress express massage, a bouquet facial, and many others. The spa has sauna and steam baths, sensation showers and heated marble slabs.

Conference facilities

The hotel has seven function rooms for business meetings and events. The ballroom is suitable for large and medium-size functions. It has two inter-connecting rooms and a separate exterior entrance. The Garden room beside the Cape Colony restaurant features a 2,388ft² area and a recessed minstrels’ gallery. It can accommodate 150 people for a reception. The Union Castle room is located on the hotel’s first floor and is suitable for meetings and conferences.

Private business meetings for 20 people can be hosted at the Orchid room on the ground floor. The Green Park room is housed in the Green Park annexe and opens out to an outdoor patio and fountain area. The Lord Nelson room is positioned beside the lounge and can accommodate 40 people. It features an original fireplace and wood panelled walls. The Grill room comes with golden banquettes and equestrian prints and has its own bar and separate entrance.

Leisure

The hotel includes two heated swimming pools: the Oasis and Cottage. The guests can play tennis on the hotel’s two flood-lit tennis courts located behind the garden. The hotel offers seven golf courses and an on-site golf-practice net.

The Mount Nelson’s fitness centre is equipped with cardiovascular and weight training equipment.
