GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Global Covid cases near 51 million – huge rises in US and UK

By Paul Dennis

10 November

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached nearly 51 million, with more than 1,263,000 deaths and 33,289,000 recoveries.

The US have the highest number of confirmed cases, forming almost a fifth of all cases worldwide, and is continuing to rise.

The UK has seen a huge increase in cases in the last month, from over 6,000 cases on 1 October to over 23,000 on 1 November, leading the government to initiate a second lockdown to limit spread.

Despite the number of cases being significantly more than ever recorded, deaths are remaining low.

Africa continues to report low numbers of confirmed cases and deaths.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has over 64,000 confirmed cases and 1,158 deaths. While this in part could be due to low numbers of tests, similar trends are seen all over Africa.

Considering older age is a risk factor for poor prognosis, it must be noted that Africa is the youngest continent, with almost 60% of the population being under 25.

Pharmaceutical developers Pfizer and BioNTech have developed a Covid-19 vaccine that has been tested on over 43,000 participants in various countries with no safety concerns raised.

It is taken in two doses, three weeks apart with 90% protection achieved seven days after the second dose.

However, there is no information as to whether the severity of infections is reduced in vaccinated participants.
